With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it’s time we pay homage to one of the world’s oldest romance foods – chocolate!
Studies have shown the health benefits of chocolate as well as its ability to uplift mood and intensify feelings of love. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine and serotonin, substances that occur naturally in the brain and are released when we experience feelings of love and happiness. The fragrance of chocolate excites the taste buds and causes the brain to release endorphins, neurotransmitters referred to as the “love chemical”.
Chocolate also contains the most potent group of antioxidants, phenols, the same antioxidant type present in red wine. Studies also suggest that flavonoids, the plant pigment present in chocolate, help to eliminate carcinogens in the body and inhibit mechanisms that cause cancer cells.
